Minda Featured in News Article 10/30/08
An article on Minda Powers-Douglas and her new book "Translating Tombstones" has been posted on the website for the Argus/Dispatch based in Moline, Ill. Read it here:

Update on Epitaphs Magazine Issue #8
A Note from the Editor
Epitaphs Magazine issue #8 is in progress and will be out soon. In order to keep it cost effective for you, this issue will have a full-color cover with black-and-white inside pages. Lulu.com has raised their prices on color printing substantially and also raised their shipping and handling charges. It's disappointing, but I'm working with it as best as I can until I decide whether to move to another publisher. Once the cost per issue is determined, I will post it.

Thanks for your continued support!

Minda's Personal Christmas List
It's almost here, everyone. Thanksgiving is just over a week away, and Christmas is soon to follow. Now the question is, what the heck to we get for the people on our lists?

That answer is easy (for you, at least):
- "Cemetery Walk"
- "Translating Tombstones"
- Epitaphs Magazine issues
- TheCemeteryClub.com items (see below)
- Tastefully Simple

Is that too self-promoting? ;-)

Well, in the upcoming issue of Epitaphs, you'll be able to read the reviews of a number of cemetery books. We've at least double the usual amount in this issue. So you don't need to JUST buy "Cemetery Walk" this year.

As for what I want, my present came early this year and will officially arrive on Jan. 20: A brand new president!!!! Hooray!!!!!

Minda's New Book is Released!
Translating Tombstones
It seems like I've been working on this book forever! And now it's finished! It's a whole different story writing a book with a toddler in the house. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm very pleased with Translating Tombstones: Your Guide to Symbolism and Meaning in the Cemetery." It began as a small guidebook and turned into a full-blown book. And you get to benefit!

Here's what it's all about (from the back cover): "A dove? An anchor? A book? A skull and crossbones? You can find these and many, many other symbols on tomb-stones, but what do they mean? Cemeteries are fascinating places places filled with history, art and meaning. The symbols carved on tombstones say a lot about the people who once lived and are now buried in our eternal parks. This book will explain the meanings behind the symbols and help you understand the special language of tombstones."

The book is an 88-page soft cover in 6x9" format for easy carrying in your tote. To order your copy, send a payment of $18.95 ($15 for book, $3.95 s/h) via PayPal to minda@thecemeteryclub.com. You may also send a check or money order to: Minda Powers-Douglas, PO Box 1163, Moline, IL 61266-1163. If you live outside the U.S., please e-mail minda.epitaphsmag@gmail.com for shipping costs (PayPal only for international orders, please). For a sneak peek at the book, click on the cover.

Chippiannock Wins 75 Trees ... Thanks to You!
This fall, Chippiannock will receive 75 trees, which will go far in replenishing those lost in the July windstorm. Thank you to everyone who voted in the Modern Woodmen/WQAD-sponsored Plant-A-Tree contest.

Chippiannock Cemetery located in Rock Island, Illinois, suffered greatly from the destructive storm on July 21. At least 125 trees were destroyed, and the damage is estimated at about nearly $100,000, which is the cemetery's budget for an entire year.

Volunteers Still Needed for Clean-up
Adult volunteers and youths ages 12 and older (with responsible adult) are still needed to help pick up branches and limbs lying throughout the cemetery and stack them along the roadways. Volunteers may stop during business hours to offer assistance. If your organization would like to schedule your own volunteer day, call the cemetery at (309) 788-6622.

If anyone is interested in volunteering as a group as part of TheCemeteryClub.com, please e-mail Minda at minda.epitaphsmag@gmail.com

Chicken Soup for the Taphophile's Soul?
Did you ever think you were weird because you liked cemeteries? Have you ever gotten "the look" from someone when you told him or her that you could spend hours in a cemetery, armed with a camera? When you first came across this site, did you think, "I thought I was the only one!"? If this sounds like you, then we want your stories!

A new book is in the works that will feature YOUR stories. Share how you became a taphophile, what first drew you to cemeteries and what keeps you coming back for more. Tell us about your experiences.

E-mail your stories to minda.epitaphsmag@gmail.com with "I Thought It Was Just Me" in the subject line.

Reach Out and Make a Difference
Being an active participant in the world around me has been a big part of my life for many years. It started when I was in college and first began feeling my way around the causes that meant something to me. Then I took matters into my own hands by creating the Girls Make a Difference workshop and then by writing "Cemetery Walk," creating this site and starting Epitaphs Magazine. My cemetery writing is something I do not just because I love them; it is a way I can help people understand and appreciate their importance. Thus, it is very important to me to encourage others to make a difference to the world, too. With this in mind, I have added a section called "Make a Difference" on the Links page. Check it out and make a positive change in the world! Links

'Cemetery Travels, part 1' - Video

Cemetery Fiction Added to Site

I've posted a story I recently wrote, which I'm planning to include in a book of short fiction. I hope you take the chance to read it and let me know what you think. I've recently taken the plunge back into fiction, which I haven't done for a long, long time. I hope you like it. Check it out at Cemetery Fiction

'Cemetery Walk' Receives Favorable International Reviews
Minda's book "Cemetery Walk" received favorable reviews in two international publications: the March-April 2006 issue of International Cemetery & Funeral Management and the March 2006 issue of The British Columbia Genealogist.

The International Cemetery & Funeral Management, which is published by the International Cemetery and Funeral Association (ICFA), notes that "Cemetery Walk" is "a pleasant and amusing book, a great way to divert the idle moment for anybody who likes cemeteries. It would make a fine addition to the bookstore of a historic cemetery or site, any place where the ardent cemetery fan is likely to lurk after that graveyard statue tour or tombstone-viewing expedition." The article also mentions Epitaphs Magazine. You can visit the IFCA's website at www.icfa.org .

The British Columbia Genealogist, which is published by the British Columbia Genealogy Society, says the book is "a very personal, sometimes even quirky, introduction to cemetery history and lore and to ideas about death as expressed in art and burial practices. Little is excluded--she discusses post-mortem photography, Victorian cemetery art, modern green burials and the paranormal, for example." You can visit the Society's website at www.bcgs.ca.
