How to be Safe in the Cemetery
by Loren Rhoads, from her blog "Cemetery Travel: Adventures in Graveyards Around the World"

Loren Rhoads has compiled a great list of must-haves when visiting cemeteries. While most of us make sure we have our cameras, it's just as important if not more so) to make sure we have the right supplies to be safe.

Visit Loren's blog to read the article:

Unique Gravesites
by Pat Long
Here are some very unique headstones and markers from my Tombstone Treasures photography service, all from Crystal Valley Cemetery in Manitou Springs, Colorado.
Joyce Janet Hosken
DOB 6/10/51 DOD 11/10/01

(Block 24)
Her inscription reads: "A loving committed mother and companion who's compassion for people and nature left and indelible presence in this world. Her spiritual being will be with you always." Next is "To the world you may be one but to the one you may be the world." Lastly, and this really hit home, "If you must be blue, be a bright blue."

The Freddie Monument
G.F. and A. Schneider
DOD 10/28/1887
Aged 2 years, 6 months

(Block 11)
Their monument is so unusual, and given their young age, this reminds me of possibly a crib or small child's bed. The design is fabulous and ornate as you can see the heart linked chains with tassel. There is a patent on the design, but I unfortunately couldn't find it.

Kelly Anne Murphy
DOD 4/4/1986

(Block 3, behind the historic building)
I have to say this is one of the most beautiful headstones I've seen. It's simple. very down to earth, and the expressions of love left by visitors is undeniable. On the flat stone rose painting it says "Together We Will Live Forever."

Videos of Oakdale Memorials Gardens Victorian Day Forget-Me-Not Events
Videos by Zegmorien

Oakdale Memorial Gardens in Davenport, Iowa, was founded in 1856 as Oakdale Cemetery (the gates still say the original name). The grounds include acres and acres of interments, a public mausoleum, pond 11 private mausolea, scattering grounds and a pet cemetery.

Since 2005, Oakdale has presented Forget-Me-Not Victorian Day, a walking tour of the grounds featuring actors portraying up to a dozen historical figures buried on the grounds. These videos showcase some of those performances.

Mabel Heath Palmer - public mausoleum (2009)
Joseph Bettendorf (2009)
Dr. Washington Freeman Peck (2009)
William Theophilus (2009)
Sarah Peterson (2009)

Poetry and Epitaphs
by Kathryn Heim

"The Christian beliefs of renewal, rebirth and new life are beliefs that I take very seriously. I also take much comfort from these beliefs. For I truly believe that God has a better life than we have now prepared for us after death. I find comfort in this.

"I love words, and I believe that the greatest legacy we can leave for others is in our words, messages and stories passed down from generation to generation. Therefore, I am drawn through my faith and my love of writing to pen some final thoughts and messages. I believe that death is not a final goodbye. I believe that there is hope in dying, and I try to expose that hope. It is a hope sent from God, a 'gift,' if you will." - Kathryn

***

God's grace sustains
and breaks death's chains
bringing peace to me,
now evensong
is heaven's dawn
and my eternity.

***

Look to the sky
not at the ground
for that is where
my soul is found,
for like the birds
that fly so free
my soul is in
eternity.

***

Flowers bloom within
my soul on me,
wherever beauty can be found
that's where I'll be.

***

As the flowers
bloom in spring
you and I
will meet again.
The glorious season
blows her breath
and melts the icy
grip of death.

***

My savior knocked
upon my door
and said come live
forever more.

***

With the wind
my spirit blows
my soul shines
with the sun
know that I do
live again
though earthly days are done.

***
