• Cemetery Walk of West Lawn-The Red Tour West Lawn Cemetery, Canton, Ohio July 18 at 10 a.m. to noon Cost: FREE Join Curator, Kim Kenney, for a walking tour of historic West Lawn Cemetery which is adjacent to the Wm. McKinley Presidential Library and Museum and McKinley Monument in Canton, Ohio. This tour will feature the Timken mausoleum, Max Stern & Henry Mann, the Civil War statue, and "Boss" Hoover. For more info: mmuseum@neo.rr.com • Baseball Great to Be Honored July 27 at Green Lawn Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio Sunday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Cost: FREE Billy Southworth, a successful baseball manager in the 1940s, will be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in Coperstown, N.Y., on Sunday, July 27. Southworth, who lived much of his life in Sunbury in Delaware County, was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus when he died in 1969. As a way of honoring Southworth for his achievements, Green Lawn will be holding a special program to remember Southworth. That program will be held Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m., the same time as the enshrinement ceremonies in Cooperstown. This is a free program and the public is invited. International League President Randy Mobley and Ray Stein, sports editor of the Columbus Dispatch, will speak. The program will be held at Southworth’s grave in Section 100, but in case of rain, it will be moved indoors at the Huntington Chapel. Southworth played for several teams in the 1920s, and managed in the International League before going to the majors where he managed the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Braves, taking both teams to the World Series. http://www.greenlawncolumbus.org • Green Lawn's 160-Year Anniversary Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio Huntington Chapel Aug. 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. Cost: A program celebrating the founders of Green Lawn Cemetery will be presented. The program will include information on the 39 Founders who signed and petitioned to create the Cemetery in July 1848. Some of the most prominent names in Columbus history will be involved. http://www.greenlawncolumbus.org • Bohemian National Cemetery Association Annual Picnic Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago, Ill. Aug. 3, 2008, at noon to 4 p.m. Cost: $10 donation The old-fashioned picnic will be held at the historic and scenic grounds of the Bohemian National Cemetery which is now listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Food and refreshment will be available for purchase. Entertainment provided by the Junior Dixieland Band from Marianske Lazne, Czech Republic. The band is composed of 10 young musicians and directed by Bedrich Smrcka. Parking will be available on site. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets for seating. We will have local actors portraying some of the most interesting people here at Woodland Cemetery. Come, look and listen as each actor dressed in character, tells you a little about themselves. From John Van Cleve who established the cemetery to The Wright Brothers who discovered flight and of course Erma Bombeck one of the most admired humorist writers of our day. Contact Debbie Mescher at 228-3221 with any questions. • Gravediggers' Ball Location: Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia Date: Oct. 10, 2008 Cost: $150 per person or $1,200 per table of 10 The Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery announce the resurrection of the 4th annual fundraiser. This unique fundraising event will include dinner and dancing, as well as silent and live auctions. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Quake, a dynamic 11-piece dance band. Open bar will be available prior to dinner, and cash bar afterwards. Black tie or costume is requested. Parking is not included, but is easily accessible at the League’s Garage (Sansom Street entrance.) They are currently seeking event sponsors, advertisers and contributors to assist in funding this event, which will benefit programs helping youth impacted by urban violence to channel their grief into creative outlets of self-expression and empowerment. Musical entertainment was provided by The Quake, a dynamic 11-piece dance band who has become a popular favorite at many of the region's finest venues! Cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and live entertainment rounded out the evening. The third resurrection of the Ball garnered $10,000 more in revenue than last year's totals, and an impressive 310 people attended the gala. C.M. Zelms of Powell won first place with a photo showing carnations and a penny on a marker. The photo was entitled “Penny For Your Thoughts.” Second place went to Mariana Cornell who entered a photo of a silhouette of a sundial.
